Behaviour
A schooling coastal predator that feeds on small baitfish, krill, mysids, and marine worms swept along surf zones and beach gutters. Dense surface-feeding schools push baitfish into bird-marked frenzies visible for kilometres along southern Australian coastlines. Active dawn-dusk and through daylight when prey is abundant; activity peaks 15-20°C (59-68°F) through warmer months. Strong response to rising swell and increased water movement bringing prey items into the wash zone.

Line Fishing
Spinning
The dominant method. Cast small chrome and silver metal slugs (5-15g), small soft plastics, or 1/8-1/4oz jigs into bird-marked surface schools and rip them through fast on a high-speed retrieve. The strike comes on the drop or mid-retrieve. Bright pink, white, and chrome outproduce muted colours when fish are competing. 2-4kg braid with a 3-5kg fluorocarbon trace handles the size class and the rocky-platform fishing.
Surf Casting
The traditional southern Australian beach-and-rock approach. Cast a paternoster rig with two long-shank size 4-2 hooks baited with pilchard fillets, blue sardines, or fresh prawn strips into beach gutters and rock-platform whitewater. Light surf-casting rod (3-4m) and 4-6kg mainline; minimum lead to hold the gutter. Schools push into surf zones on rising swell — fish hard during the swell pulse, slow down on the back-drop.
Float Fishing
The classic jetty, pier, and rock-platform method. Suspend pilchard fillets, prawn pieces, or blue sardines 1-3m under a small bobby float and drift through schooling fish. Pre-baiting with a steady stream of pilchard berley draws schools to the structure. Size 4-2 long-shank hook, 3-5kg fluorocarbon trace.
Live Lining
Live tubeworms, beach worms, or small live baitfish drifted naturally near jetty pylons, rock-platform foam edges, and estuary mouth holes — particularly effective for the larger individuals in a school that have grown wary of metal lures. Small running sinker or unweighted, size 4-2 hook, 3-5kg fluorocarbon trace.
Fly Fishing
Saltwater Fly
Cast small Clouser Minnows, Surf Candies, and Glass Minnows on a 5-7wt rod with floating or intermediate line into bird-marked surface boils. Strip fast — schools key on speed-and-flash and the take comes mid-strip. Light 1-2kg fluorocarbon tippet handles the size class.
