Identification
The heaviest of the marlins — a massive Indo-Pacific bluewater apex built for explosive unstoppable charges. Brutal dogged power and long sustained runs.

Behaviour
An Indo-Pacific bluewater apex predator hunting continental shelf edges, seamounts, current lines, and offshore-island upwellings in 0-100m. Surface to mid-water feeder — explosive crash strikes on baitfish schools and free-swimming squid. Highly migratory, following warm currents and bait concentrations. Larger adults are mostly solitary; smaller fish travel in loose pairs. Strong site fidelity to productive feeding grounds. Peak activity above 24°C (75°F).

Line Fishing
Trolling
The dominant Indo-Pacific approach. Pull a spread of 30-40cm skirted lures (Pakulas, Mold Crafts, jet heads) and rigged whole skipjack or bonito belly baits at 6-9 knots along shelf edges, seamounts, current lines, and offshore upwellings. Short corner and long rigger positions. Heavy 60-130kg stand-up tackle and non-offset circle hooks for clean release.
Live Lining
The premier trophy approach. Bridle-rig a live skipjack, bonito, mackerel, or small yellowfin (2-5kg) on a 16/0-20/0 non-offset circle hook and slow-troll or drift along shelf edges, seamounts, and bait schools. Allow the fish to fully run before engaging drag. Standard for fish over 400kg.
Spinning
An opportunistic approach during surface feeds. Cast 250-450g large stickbaits and poppers to lit-up fish chasing bait or visible bird workups. Heavy 80-130lb braid PE setups with stout rods. Aggressive walk-the-dog or pop-pop-pause cadence. Best in calm conditions with cooperative fish.
Fly Fishing
Saltwater Fly
The ultimate big-game fly challenge. Sight-cast 25-35cm baitfish streamers to teased-up fish using 14-16wt rods, then strip aggressively in long fast pulls. Team approach — one angler teases the fish to the boat with a hookless lure while the fly caster intercepts. Best success on fish under 200kg.
Spear Fishing
Bluewater Spearfishing
A hardcore Indo-Pacific bluewater spearo target. Hunt blue-water shelf edges, seamounts, and current lines in open water down to 30m. Use a 150-160cm bluewater speargun with 8.0mm shaft and full bluewater rig — multiple bands, slip-tip, breakaway float-line, and 30m+ of float-line into a hard float. Demands experience, conditioning, and a vetted big-game team.
