Identification
A colossal, torpedo-shaped apex predator with a deep-shouldered, laterally compressed frame built for sustained long-distance speed and explosive bursts. Females dwarf males, often three to four times heavier at maturity.
- Brilliant cobalt to dark purple upper body with metallic sheen
- Silvery-white belly crossed by around 15 pale vertical bars that fade after death
- Long, spear-like bill extending from the snout, rounded in cross-section
- Tall pointed back fin running along most of the back
- Rigid side fins that cannot fold flat against the body

Behaviour
Apex open-ocean predators that slash prey with their bills — powerful lateral swipes stun schools of baitfish before the fish circles back to consume. Solitary but aggregate around seamounts, canyon edges, current breaks, and offshore banks where pelagic prey concentrate. Peak feeding at dawn and dusk with opportunistic strikes through the day. Most active in 24-28°C (75-82°F) water and drawn to temperature breaks, current edges, and weed lines near the surface.

Line Fishing
Trolling
Troll skirted lures (23-40cm) or rigged natural baits at 6-9 knots in a spread of four to six lines staggered at varying distances. Target temperature breaks, current edges, weed lines, seamounts, and canyon edges. Use circle hooks on heavy monofilament leaders.
Live Lining
Pitch or slow-tow unweighted live skipjack, bonito, or small tuna (2-5kg) to raised or cruising fish. Let the bait swim naturally, feed line on the take, and allow the fish to turn before coming tight on a circle hook (8/0-12/0).
Chunking
Drift and deploy a chum slick of cut mackerel, bonito, and tuna to hold fish near the boat. Present whole or chunk baits on conventional tackle at varying depths through the slick. Circle hooks mandatory for hookup consistency and release.
Fly Fishing
Saltwater Fly
Run hookless teasers behind the boat to raise fish, then cast a large streamer (25-35cm) once one shows and strip aggressively to trigger the strike. Requires a practised crew to work teasers and reposition the boat on demand.
