Identification
A torpedo-shaped flats specialist built for blistering speed across shallow tropical sand and seagrass — slender muscular profile delivers explosive runs that strip line at an alarming rate. Sexes similar.

Behaviour
A shallow-flats specialist of tropical sand and seagrass — roots through soft bottoms with a suck-and-blow technique that exposes buried prey, often tailing visibly with the upper tail lobe breaking the surface in inches of water. Opportunistic feeder on shrimp, small crabs, baitfish, and worms. Most active in 20-28°C (68-82°F) water; peak feeding through tide changes that sweep prey across the flats. Schools of small fish work the flats together; trophy fish often go solo.

Fly Fishing
Saltwater Fly
The iconic flats fly target of the Bahamas, Florida Keys, Belize, Mexican Caribbean, and Christmas Island — sight-cast small crab and shrimp patterns to tailing or cruising fish from a poled skiff or by wading. Lead 1-1.5m ahead in calm water (further in chop), let the fly sink, then long slow strips to imitate fleeing prey. Strip-strike — never lift the rod.
Streamer
A productive variation along channel edges and deeper drop-offs where larger fish hunt small baitfish — strip a Clouser, Lefty's Deceiver, or glass-minnow pattern with fast erratic strips to trigger aggressive strikes. Same 8wt floating line; 6-8kg tippet for heavier fish that hold off the flats.

A productive light-tackle sight-cast option for anglers without fly skill — cast a 1/8-1/4oz skimmer jig or small soft-plastic shrimp tipped with a piece of fresh shrimp 3-5m ahead of cruising fish. Let the jig sink to the bottom, then a slow hop-and-pause retrieve. PE0.6-PE1 spinning, 30cm of 12lb fluorocarbon leader.
Bottom Fishing
A simple effective approach when sight-fishing isn't possible — present a live shrimp or piece of fresh conch, squid, or fish strip on a #1-#6 non-offset circle hook with no weight or a small split shot.
