Identification
A muscular SoCal and Baja surf-zone croaker built for cruising turbulent shallow water along sandy beaches. A subtle, light-biting forager that fights hard once hooked.

Behaviour
A SoCal and Baja surf-zone bottom forager working sandy beach troughs, gutters between sand bars, and shallow inshore flats in 0.5-3m. Uses a sensitive chin barbel to detect sand crabs, mole crabs, and bloodworms buried in the wash. Most active on rising and high tides when waves stir up prey. Strong dawn and dusk feeding patterns. Active in moderate 0.5-1.5m surf — backs off when conditions go flat or oversized. Peak activity 14-20°C (57-68°F).

Line Fishing
Surf Casting
The dominant SoCal and Baja approach. Carolina or high-low rig with 30-60g pyramid sinker and a live sand crab, mole crab, or bloodworm on a size 2-6 baitholder hook. Cast just past the breakers into troughs and gutters between sand bars. Light, subtle bites — watch the line and rod tip closely. Best on the rising tide at first and last light.
Spinning
A useful active approach in the surf zone. Cast 4-10g jigheads with small soft-plastic grubs and shrimp imitations into troughs and gutters. Slow bottom-bouncing retrieves with frequent pauses imitate sand-crab movement. Demands a delicate touch — strikes are subtle taps.
Fly Fishing

A challenging surf-zone fishery in calmer conditions and clearer water. Cast crab patterns, sand fleas, and small Clouser minnows on 7-8wt sinking or intermediate lines into troughs and sandy gutters. Slow short strips along the bottom imitate natural prey. Demands precise depth control and stealthy wading.
