Behaviour
A reef-associated mackerel — more solitary and reef-oriented than its Spanish-mackerel relatives. Patrols reef edges, ledges, wrecks, and patch reefs in clear water at 5-25m. Ambushes baitfish from below using bursts of speed; small groups occasionally aggregate around structure during spawning. Tolerates 23-28°C (73-82°F). Continuous swimmer with no swim bladder. Peak activity at dawn and dusk in clear water.

How it's caught
Line Fishing
Trolling
The defining Caribbean reef-edge approach — slow-troll rigged ballyhoo, small spoons, or shallow-diving plugs at 4-6 knots along reef edges, ledges, wrecks, and patch reefs. 0.5m of #5-7 single-strand wire leader mandatory. Watch for surface flashes and bird workups along reef perimeters.
Spinning
An exhilarating sight-cast fishery when cero hold tight to reef edges or hunt visible bait. Cast 30-60g slender metal jigs, surface poppers, and small stickbaits with fast continuous retrieves. Topwater walks produce explosive surface strikes. PE2-3 setups with 0.5m of #5-7 single-strand wire leader.
Chunking
Productive over patch reefs and reef edges in clear Caribbean water. Establish a steady chum line with cut ballyhoo, pilchards, or small baitfish; fish hooked chunks or whole small baits in the slick at staggered depths. 0.5m of #5-7 single-strand wire leader mandatory.
Fly Fishing
Saltwater Fly
A productive sight-fishing target on Florida Keys and Bahamian reef edges when cero hunt visible bait. Cast sparse Clouser Minnows, Lefty's Deceivers, surf candies, and glass-minnow patterns from a 8-10wt rod with floating or intermediate line. Fast erratic strips trigger committed strikes. 30cm of 30lb single-strand wire shock tippet handles teeth.
Spear Fishing
Inshore Spearfishing
Productive around inshore reef edges, ledges, and patch reefs in clear Caribbean water. Active hunting — cero patrol reef perimeters quickly, fast lead and decisive shots required. Excellent visibility (15m+) and calm conditions critical. Best during warmer months when fish concentrate on shallow reefs.
