Behaviour
A Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic apex sparid that ambushes baitfish from rocky ledges, submarine canyons, and reef walls in 20-100m. Powerful canines crush squid, cuttlefish, and small reef fish with surgical precision. Adults solitary patrolling structure edges; juveniles school in shallower coastal water. Peak feeding at dawn and dusk above 15°C (59°F); pulls into shallower coastal water when baitfish concentrate inshore. Brief spawning aggregations form in surface waters.
Diet: Mackerel, Sardines, Small Reef Fish, Squid, Cuttlefish, Octopus, Shrimp
How it's caught
Line Fishing
Jigging
The signature Mediterranean method. Drop 80-150g metal jigs over rocky reef, submarine canyons, and ledges in 30-100m and rip aggressively — strikes come on the lift. Shore jigging from cliffs at first and last light equally productive. Hard hookset and instant heavy drag; fish bolt straight back into structure.
Bottom Fishing
Heritage Adriatic and Tyrrhenian approach for trophy fish. Live squid or cuttlefish on a sliding sinker rig with 4/0-6/0 circle hook, lowered tight to ledges and reef bases in 30-100m. Slow drift or anchor on the upcurrent edge; maintain bottom contact. Most productive midday when fish refuse aggressive jigs.
Trolling
A Croatian and Italian heritage technique for prospecting canyon walls and reef drop-offs. Slow-troll live calamari or sinking stickbaits along contour edges in 20-80m using downriggers or diving planers to maintain depth. Covers water efficiently to locate actively feeding fish along depth transitions.
Spinning
Effective off rocky shore and from boat over mixed bottom in 5-30m. Cast 30-60g sinking stickbaits, soft plastic swimbaits, or metal jigs to structure and work back with erratic jerks and pauses. Most productive at dawn and dusk when fish push up onto shallower edges chasing baitfish.
Spear Fishing
Inshore Spearfishing
A premier advanced Mediterranean reef-spearo target on rocky reef, submarine canyons, and vertical walls in 15-30m. Wary in clear water — patient ambush from a holding position behind structure produces shots. Shot placement critical; fish bolt hard into rocks. Float-line setup; medium-heavy speargun.
Bluewater Spearfishing
Trophy-class deep-water spearfishing on Mediterranean canyon walls and offshore drop-offs in 25-50m. Demands advanced breath-hold and depth capability. Hunt patrolling fish along the wall on a single deep dive. Float-line essential — fish drive hard for the rocks after the shot.
