Identification
A massive elongated NE Atlantic and Mediterranean reef-and-wreck ambush predator — snake-like cylindrical profile delivers extraordinary brute power. Females out-grow males.

Behaviour
A solitary nocturnal ambush predator of NE Atlantic, Mediterranean, and English Channel rocky reef, boulder fields, and shipwrecks — holds tight to lairs in 5-100m of water through the day with only the head protruding, then emerges at full dark to patrol structure for fish, cephalopods, and crabs. Hunts by scent and low-light vision; takes baits aggressively from dusk through dawn with peak activity on dark moonless nights. Most active in 12-18°C (54-64°F) water.

The dominant UK, Irish, and Mediterranean nighttime charter approach — anchor over rocky reef, wrecks, and boulder fields and present a whole mackerel, squid, or large fish chunk on a heavy running ledger or fixed paternoster directly on the bottom within 1-2m of structure. 8/0-12/0 forged hooks on 80-150lb wire or cable leader. Strike instantly on the take and apply maximum pressure to prevent the fish reaching its lair.
Live Lining
A productive approach over wrecks and rocky reef when fresh bait is scarce or fish are pressured — free-line a live mackerel, pouting, or whiting on a 8/0-10/0 forged hook with 80-150lb wire or cable leader and just enough lead to hold position. Drop directly to structure and wait for the slow heavy pickup. Strike hard the moment line moves and lift the fish clear.
Surf Casting
An accessible UK, Irish, and Mediterranean shore approach from rocky breakwaters, harbour walls, and piers with deep water at the base — drop a whole mackerel or fish-chunk bait on a heavy fixed paternoster down to structure on a 13-15ft beachcaster, 50lb braid mainline, and 80lb wire leader to 8/0-10/0 hooks. Shore fish run smaller (5-20kg) than boat fish. Strictly nighttime.
