Identification
An adaptable Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean inshore predator built for surge-water acceleration around rocky shore and estuaries. A powerful aerobic fighter that uses tidal rip.

Behaviour
An adaptable Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean coastal predator hunting rocky shores, estuaries, beach gullies, and offshore reefs in 1-30m. Hunts shallow surge water and tidal rips at first and last light, striking baitfish with explosive acceleration. Adults switch from juvenile crustacean diet to fish-dominated piscivory. Partial migrant — some populations resident, others run between offshore winter haunts and inshore summer feeding grounds. Peak activity 12-20°C (54-68°F).

The dominant modern UK and Irish method. Cast 14-30g hard lures — surface walkers, pencil poppers, shallow-diving jerkbaits — or 4-6" soft plastic shads on weighted heads to rocky shore, weed beds, and surf gullies in 1-10m. Animate with sharp jerks and pauses. Tidal flow and first/last light are key triggers.
Surf Casting
The heritage UK and Irish beach approach. Long-cast running paternoster or leger rig with 100-170g sinker and live sandeel, mackerel strip, peeler crab, or fresh squid into deep beach gullies and channels. Most productive on rising and falling tides at first and last light. Winter beach storms produce trophy fish.
Live Lining
The premier trophy approach around rocky reef, current breaks, and tidal rips in 5-20m. Free-line a live sandeel, mackerel, or sprat on a 2/0-4/0 circle hook with minimal weight, drifting on the tide tight to structure. Live prawns and peeler crab excel in estuaries during spring tides.

A growing UK and Irish flats and estuary fishery. Strip 7-13cm baitfish streamers (sandeel and Clouser patterns) on 7-9wt fast-sinking lines along rocky shore, kelp edges, and shallow estuary flats in 1-3m. Surface poppers produce explosive boils at first and last light.
