Identification
A massive Southeast Asian freshwater snakehead with a thick torpedo-shaped frame engineered for explosive ambush attacks in dense vegetation. Juveniles brightly marked, darkening dramatically with maturity.
- Juveniles under 20cm: bright red-orange with two black lengthwise stripes and orange intermediate area
- Adults: bluish-black and white pattern on upper body with broad dark lengthwise stripe
- Large depressed snake-like head with massive powerful jaws
- Long rounded cylindrical body with extended fins running nearly to the tail
- Breathes atmospheric air through a primitive lung — surfaces every 5-10 minutes

Behaviour
Extremely aggressive apex freshwater predators — fish make up 70-80% of the diet, with frogs, crustaceans, waterfowl, and reptiles filling out the remainder. The most predatory snakehead. Ambushers that hold motionless in dense vegetation or deep holes and launch devastating close-range strikes. Activity peaks at dawn and dusk; fish retreat to deeper water through midday heat. Surface every 5-10 minutes to breathe air — these surfacings are the angler's visual cue to the fish's location.

Work topwater frogs, buzzbaits, and walking plugs tight against lily pads, submerged timber, and vegetation edges with weedless rigs. Precise casts into small openings where fish hold. Sight-cast to every surfacing fish — set the hook hard and pile on immediate pressure to keep the fish out of cover.
Live Lining
Free-line or float-fish live small fish, frogs, or large insects near submerged timber, vegetation, and deep holes. Use 4/0-8/0 circle hooks with heavy wire or fluorocarbon leaders. Wait for the fish to commit fully before setting — mouthing is normal — then pile on immediate pressure.
Bottom Fishing
Anchor chicken liver or cut fish on a bottom rig in deep pools and channels during midday heat or dry-season concentrations. Heavy tackle is essential — fish dive hard into deep cover on the hookset. Bites are often subtle before the fish commits to running.
Fly Fishing
Streamer
Strip large 10-15cm baitfish streamers or surface poppers along vegetation edges on 11-12wt tackle. Aggressive strips imitate fleeing prey; pop-and-pause cadences trigger explosive surface strikes. Wire or heavy shock tippet is mandatory and immediate pressure after the take is essential.
