Identification
A powerful freshwater predator with a torpedo-shaped muscular build engineered for blistering runs and acrobatic aerial leaps. Delivers relentless pulling power. Females grow larger than males; juveniles slimmer, filling out with age.

Behaviour
Apex freshwater predators — solitary hunters that group up during seasonal migrations. Active pursuit hunters using speed and powerful jaws to run down fish, insects, and occasional small vertebrates. Migration is temperature-driven; spawning runs cover up to 400km upstream. Peaks 20-28°C (68-82°F). Aggressive opportunistic feeders — strikes are fast and committed, often exploding at the surface. Holds on main channel current seams and eddy edges through high water.

Work large topwater poppers, walk-the-dog stickbaits, jerkbaits, and shallow-diving plugs across main channels, current seams, and eddy edges with a fast aggressive retrieve. Topwater strikes are explosive and often repeated. Steel or 30kg+ fluorocarbon leader is mandatory — the teeth slice lighter material.
Live Lining
Free-line or float-fish live small baitfish along current breaks, eddies, and channel seams where dorado hold on structure. Heavy fluorocarbon or steel leader is mandatory. Let the fish commit and turn with the bait before coming tight on the hookset.
Fly Fishing
Streamer
Strip large 10-18cm baitfish streamers (Andino Deceiver is the benchmark) on floating or intermediate lines tight to current seams and structure. Fast aggressive strips mimic fleeing baitfish. Dark colours on stained water, flashy profiles on clear. Steel or heavy fluorocarbon bite tippet is mandatory.
Dry Fly
Skate mouse patterns and foam poppers across current seams and backwater pockets with aggressive stripping to create surface commotion. Strikes are explosive — resist the urge to lift the rod and commit to a firm strip-strike. Most productive in low light and during visible surface feeding.
