Identification
Compact alpine-stream specialist with the most striking colouration of any North American trout — golden flanks, olive back, and a crimson lateral band. California's state fish; rarely tops 30cm in native streams.

Behaviour
An aggressive surface-feeding alpine specialist in clear cold streams and lakes where food is scarce. Diet centres on aquatic and terrestrial insects, supplemented in lakes by scuds and small baitfish. The short-season starvation environment makes them famously unselective — a reasonable presentation usually draws a strike. Peak 14-17°C (57-63°F); feeding compressed into the brief alpine summer once ice has melted. Daytime feeders throughout — no dawn/dusk preference.

Fly Fishing
Dry Fly
The defining method. Cast small attractor dries upstream into shallow riffles, undercut banks, and pool tailouts and let them drift drag-free through feeding lanes. Golden trout in their backcountry habitat have rarely seen a fly — accuracy beats imitation. Hopper patterns through August deliver explosive surface takes. Wrist-snap hooksets only on these small soft-mouthed fish.
Nymphing
Drop a small nymph as a dropper under a buoyant dry, or fish a tight-line Euro-rig through deep pool tailouts and lake shelves. Scud patterns are the lake killer — fish them on intermediate or sink-tip line over weed beds and inlet currents where larger lake-form goldens cruise.
Line Fishing
Spinning
Ultralight cast inline spinners and tiny spoons (1-3g) into deeper alpine lake pockets where fly casting is wind-defeated. Slow steady retrieves with occasional pauses. Gold and copper finishes with red accents trigger the most strikes. Niche relative to fly fishing in this species' range — most native habitat is too small or too remote for productive spin work.
