Identification
East Asia's flagship urban inshore gamefish — an elongated laterally compressed predator built for burst pursuit and structure ambush. Solid runs and head shakes. Sex-changing — males first, females later; biggest fish are always females.
- Large mouth with lower jaw protruding beyond the upper jaw
- Two back fins — first with 12-15 spines, second with 12-14 soft rays
- Slightly forked tail
- Small black spots on back and back fin in juveniles, lost in larger adults
Where it holds
- Estuaries
- Inshore
- Rocky Shores
Behaviour
A predatory coastal-estuarine fish with a sharp life-stage diet shift — adults become almost entirely piscivorous with backup crustacean feeding. Combines ambush hunting around structure with active mid-water pursuit of baitfish schools. Primarily nocturnal — peak feeding at dusk and through the night, particularly around man-made structure where prey is concentrated by light shadows. Younger fish school; mature adults are more solitary. Sex-changing — males first, transitioning to female.
Diet: Baitfish, Anchovies, Sand Eels, Shrimp, Small Fish
How it's caught
Line Fishing
Spinning
The premier method and the foundation of Japan's iconic urban shore-fishing scene. Cast 9-13cm minnow plugs (suspending and floating), lipless rattling minnows, metal vibration baits, and 4-5 inch soft-plastic shads from piers, jetties, river-mouth seawalls, and shadow lines along bridge pilings. Slow, pulsing surface retrieves on calm nights — fish key on the wake on a downsized profile. Long 8-10ft rods, 0.15-0.20mm braid, 30-40lb fluorocarbon shock leader.
Live Lining
The traditional Tokyo Bay live-bait method. Free-line or lightly weighted live shrimp, Japanese halfbeak, or small jack mackerel near pier pilings, harbour walls, and rocky structure. 3/0-5/0 circle hook lets the fish fully take the bait before pressure comes on. Particularly effective during winter when lure fishing slows; pre-baiting with shrimp scraps draws fish onto the spot.
Jigging
Vertical-jig 20-60g metal jigs and metal vibration baits in deeper harbour holes, channel edges, and shipping-channel structure where fish suspend in 10-30m. Sharp lift-pause-flutter cadence; faster in warm water, slower in cold. Particularly effective during winter spawning migrations when fish drop into deeper water.
Fly Fishing
Saltwater Fly
An established Tokyo Bay and Sea of Japan urban-fly discipline. 7-9wt rod with floating, intermediate, or sink-tip line; cast Surf Candies, Mikura Candies, Clouser Minnows, and small baitfish patterns into shadow lines under harbour lights, against pier pilings, and along seawall corners. Slow, pulsing strip on the surface mimics the iconic wake-feed; fast strips on the sink-tip for deeper fish.
