Identification
A compact Indo-Pacific coastal mackerel-tuna with a streamlined torpedo build engineered for high-speed pursuit of bait schools. Males and females reach similar sizes.
- Dark blue-black back with broken wavy scribble lines, silvery flanks and white belly
- Cluster of two or more dark spots on belly between pelvic fins

Behaviour
An Indo-Pacific coastal and nearshore schooling pelagic — far more inshore-oriented than the larger tunas. Schools work surface bait under birds at island headlands, reef edges, harbour mouths, and current convergences in 0-50m. Cooperative pack-feeding herds bait into tight balls; explosive surface bust-ups mark productive water. Peak activity at dawn and dusk when bait is most vulnerable. Tolerates 18-29°C (64-84°F); juveniles common in bays and harbours.

Line Fishing
Spinning
The defining Indo-Pacific approach — exhilarating sight-cast to bust-ups under birds. Pitch 30-80g small metal slugs, stickbaits, poppers, or small soft plastics into breaking fish. Aggressive walk-the-dog, fast-pop, or fast retrieve mimicking fleeing baitfish triggers explosive strikes. PE2-3 setups with 30-50lb fluoro leader.
Trolling
A high-mileage approach for finding scattered fish along reef edges, island fringes, and current lines. Pull a spread of small skirted lures, feathers, cedar plugs, spoons, and shallow-diving plugs at 6-8 knots. 8-15kg gear standard. Watch bird workups and bait surface flicks; multiple hookups common when school is located.
Jigging
Effective when fish hold deep at 20-100m on reef edges or current breaks. Drop a 60-150g knife jig or speed jig and rip with sharp 1-2m cadence sweeps; many strikes come on the flutter fall. PE2-3 braid with 4m of fluorocarbon topshot.
Live Lining
A productive approach when schools concentrate but won't commit to lures. Free-line or float a live small mackerel, sardine, anchovy, or yakka on a 3/0-5/0 non-offset circle hook with fluorocarbon leader. Chumming with cut bait or live anchovies holds schools near the boat. 8-10kg gear with long topshot.
Fly Fishing
Saltwater Fly
A productive light-tackle Indo-Pacific fly target. Raise fish with a chum slick, then pitch 3-6 inch baitfish streamers or squid patterns from a 9-10wt rod with intermediate or floating line. Fast erratic strips mimicking fleeing baitfish trigger committed takes. Best at dawn and dusk in clear water. 6-8kg fluorocarbon shock tippet.
