Behaviour
A SoCal and Baja kelp-forest ambush predator that holds tight to amber kelp fronds, rocky reef, and artificial structure in 5-30m. Camouflages against swaying kelp from up-current edges and strikes passing baitfish with explosive acceleration. Strong site fidelity — older fish rarely leave preferred structure. Adults feed primarily at dawn and dusk on small fish, shrimp, crabs, squid, and octopus. Pulls into deeper rocky reef when surface water cools below 14°C (57°F).

Line Fishing
Live Lining
The signature SoCal calico method. Hook a live sardine, anchovy, or mackerel through the nose on a 3/0-5/0 hook with a 1/4-1/2oz sliding egg sinker, cast tight to kelp edges and let it swim freely along up-current structure. Brown-bait queenfish or white croaker for trophies.
Spinning
Highly productive on outer kelp edges and rocky reef in 5-20m. Cast 4-7" paddle-tail swimbaits on 3/4-3oz lead heads, soft plastic grubs, or topwater walking baits to visible structure and work back with erratic jerks and pauses. Triggers ambush strikes on up-current kelp edges.
Jigging
Productive over kelp stalks, submerged structure, and reef bumps. Cast 60-150g flat-iron or surface iron jigs over kelp tops and retrieve with fast aggressive sweeps for surface-feeding fish, or jig vertically beside kelp stalks for fish holding tight to fronds. Twilight hours produce explosive strikes.

The premier SoCal and Baja inshore spearfishing target. Hunt kelp forests, rocky reef, and shallow structure in 5-25m. Camouflaged fish hold inside fronds and crevices — slow careful searching with the kelp as concealment produces shots. Twilight hours best. Float-line setup; medium speargun.
