Identification
A robust, deep-bodied freshwater ambush predator with a powerful muscular frame built for explosive strikes and surging runs into cover. Females grow much larger than males. Adults fill out with age into a distinctly heavy, imposing build.
- Greenish to olive-bronze back fading to a cream-white belly
- Dark blotchy horizontal pattern along the midline rather than rows of spots
- Extremely large mouth extending well beyond the rear margin of the eye
- Deep notch between the spiny and soft portions of the back fin, nearly separating them

Behaviour
Aggressive ambush predators hunting from cover, bursting out to engulf prey in an oversized mouth. Feed on small fish, crayfish, frogs, and insects; large adults turn increasingly fish-eating and territorial around prime structure. Most active at dawn and dusk, opportunistic through the day. Peak feeding 22-26°C (72-79°F); activity falls off below 15°C (59°F) when fish move deeper but still feed lazily. Structure-oriented — relate to vegetation, timber, docks, and lily pads.
Diet: Crayfish, Bluegill, Shiners, Shad, Frogs, Aquatic Insects
How it's caught
Line Fishing
Spinning
Cast crankbaits, spinnerbaits, soft plastics, and topwater plugs to vegetation, timber, docks, and laydowns. Burn spinnerbaits over grass, walk topwaters at first light, and Texas-rig worms through heavy cover. Retrieve speeds and presentations adapt to water temp and mood.
Jigging
Flip or pitch 1/4-1/2oz skirted jigs into vegetation, laydowns, docks, and brush piles. Work with subtle hops and bottom drags to mimic crayfish. Football jigs excel on rocky bottom and ledges. Essential cold-water and prespawn presentation.
Drop Shot
Finesse presentation with a small soft plastic 30-60cm above a tungsten drop-weight. Shake the rod tip in place to animate the bait without moving it off the spot. Deadly in clear water, on pressured fish, and for suspended bass along drop-offs and ledges.
Bottom Fishing
Carolina-rig soft plastics with a 45-90cm leader above a 1/2-1oz sliding weight to drag over humps, points, and channel swings. Texas-rigged creature baits punch through mats and vegetation. Slow, methodical retrieves with frequent pauses trigger inactive fish.
Live Lining
Free-line or minimally weight large live shiners (10-15cm), shad, or bluegill near vegetation edges, dock shade, and cover. Circle hooks 2/0-5/0 let fish fully engulf before coming tight. Deadly for trophy bass in pressured waters where artificials have gone stale.
Float Fishing
Slip a bobber above live shiners or minnows to suspend the bait at precise depth near docks, weed edges, and visible cover. Minimal movement lets the bait do the work. Especially productive in clear water and during bedding when bass hold at fixed levels.
Fly Fishing
Streamer
Strip large baitfish streamers (10-20cm) through structure with 6-9wt rods and floating or intermediate lines. Erratic long strips with pauses trigger aggressive strikes. Target vegetation edges, drop-offs, laydowns, and shade during low light. Sink-tips reach deeper fish.
Dry Fly
Cast large surface poppers, deer-hair frogs, or gurgler patterns tight to lily pads, weed edges, and timber. Pop-pause retrieves create disturbance that triggers aggressive surface strikes. Most productive in warm water (above 18°C) at first and last light.
