Behaviour
A specialised ambush piscivore that hangs motionless near the surface or rests on the bottom at a 20° angle until prey enters strike range. Diet centres on shad, sunfish, minnows, and other small baitfish; frogs are taken opportunistically. The strike is a lateral head-thrash that impales prey on needle teeth before manoeuvring it head-first to swallow. Primarily nocturnal but feeds day and night in warm months. Surfaces to gulp atmospheric air — a key sight-fishing tell.
Diet: Baitfish, Shad, Sunfish, Minnows, Frogs
How it's caught
Line Fishing
Spinning
The signature method. Sight-cast unravelled-nylon-rope lures (no hook — the bony beak repels conventional hooksets) past visible surface-cruising fish, then twitch slowly past the side of the head. Teeth tangle in the nylon fibres on the strike. 50-65lb braid direct to the rope lure, no leader — the teeth are too rough for fluorocarbon. Shallow crankbaits and large jerkbaits also produce when dressed with rope tassels.
Float Fishing
Float-suspend a live shiner, small bluegill, or fresh cut-bait strip 30-90cm under a slip float over weed beds, sloughs, and oxbow backwaters. Free-spool the take and count to ten before striking — the bony jaw needs the hook to find soft tissue at the corner. Productive on summer evenings when fish gulp air at the surface.
Fly Fishing
Streamer
Sight-cast large baitfish patterns and rope-tail flies parallel to visible surface fish, leading by 30-60cm. Strip slow with long pauses; gar approach lazily and follow before committing. Nylon-rope-tail flies tangle in teeth where conventional hooks slip. Heavy bite tippet — 20-30lb fluorocarbon shock leader — handles the rough beak. 8-10wt rod manages the wind on flats and the long-bodied fight.
Bow Fishing
The most efficient harvest method. Stalk shallow-cruising or surface-gulping fish from a shallow-draft boat or by wading clear weedy shallows. Aim 15-30cm low for refraction; effective range 4-7m. Night shooting under high-output LED arrays extends the productive window through summer and is the dominant tournament format across the southern US.
