Identification
A long torpedo-shaped North American apex freshwater predator built for explosive ambush strikes over short distances. Females grow far larger than males.
- Green to red-brown colouration with darker blotches, bars, or spots along the flanks (pattern highly variable)
- Duck-billed snout lined with rows of razor-sharp teeth
- Scales cover only the upper half of the cheek and gill cover — a key field mark vs. northern pike
- Six to nine sensory pores along each side of the lower jaw

Behaviour
A solitary apex ambush predator hanging motionless along weed edges, submerged timber, and rocky points waiting for a single large prey item. Feeds sporadically — most fish carry one prey item at a time, sized one-quarter to one-half their own length. Diet is ~95% fish (suckers, perch, sunfish, minnows) with frogs and crayfish. Sharp eyesight dominates hunting; clear water essential. Peaks at dawn, dusk, and overcast days. Active 15-24°C (59-75°F); bite collapses above 27°C (81°F).

Spinning
Cast 15-30cm bucktails, glide baits, jerkbaits, topwaters, and rubber swimbaits along weed edges, rocky shoals, and weedy bays. Fan-cast structure from multiple angles; a full figure-of-8 at the boat on every cast converts follows into committed takes. 80lb braid with a 30cm wire or 80lb fluorocarbon leader is mandatory.
Trolling
Troll 20-30cm deep-diving crankbaits and large jerkbaits at 3-7 mph along weed edges, depth contours, and the thermocline. Planer boards spread the cover wider. Best search tactic on big water — once fish are marked, switch to casting. Wire leader mandatory.
Live Lining
Suspend an oversized live sucker (30-50cm), shiner, or bluegill under a quick-release float near weed edges, drop-offs, and rocky points. The go-to trophy tactic in late autumn. 80lb fluorocarbon or wire leader mandatory; let the fish run fully before setting hard — muskies grab sideways and swim before swallowing.
Jigging
Vertical-drop heavy rubber swimbaits or bucktail jigs into marked fish on deep weed edges, offshore structure, and thermocline drops during warm-water periods. Aggressive lift-pause cadences trigger reaction strikes. Wire leader mandatory.
Fly Fishing
Streamer
Strip 20-30cm articulated baitfish streamers on 10-12wt tackle along weed edges and structure with long hard strips. Wire bite tippet non-negotiable. Figure-of-8 at the rod tip on every retrieve — muskies follow almost every fly to the boat. Premier big-game freshwater fly pursuit.
