Behaviour

An Indo-Pacific tropical and subtropical coastal-pelagic mackerel — schools migrate along reef edges, offshore islands, current breaks, and continental shelves to 70m. Larger fish turn solitary; smaller schools work surface bait under bird workups. Strongly structure-oriented around outer reefs, headlands, and current convergences. Tolerates 21-29°C (70-84°F). Continuous swimmer with no swim bladder. Peak activity at dawn and dusk.

Diet: Garfish, Scads, Sardines, Anchovies, Small Mackerel, Small Squid

How it's caught

Line Fishing

Trolling

The defining Indo-Pacific approach — slow-troll rigged garfish-and-skirt combos, large diving plugs, and spoons at 4-7 knots along reef edges, offshore islands, and current convergences. Use downriggers for depth control to 30m. 0.5-1m of #7-10 single-strand wire leader mandatory — these fish slice mono instantly. Watch for bird workups and surface bust-ups.

Live Lining

A devastating trophy presentation — slow-troll or drift live garfish, scads, or sardines on a stinger rig (lead 8/0 hook + treble trailer connected by 0.5-1m of heavy wire). Free-line minimal weight near reef edges, drop-offs, and current lines; keep baits in the upper 15m. Slow-troll at 2-4 knots or drift downcurrent of structure.

Spinning

Productive when fish bust bait at the surface or hold tight to reef structure. Cast 80-200g large metal jigs, surface poppers, and big stickbaits to feeding schools. Fast erratic retrieves trigger explosive aerial strikes. PE4-6 setups with 0.5-1m of #7-10 single-strand wire leader.

Jigging

Effective when fish suspend at 30-70m on offshore reef edges and shelf drop-offs. Drop a 100-200g knife jig or speed jig and rip with sharp 1-2m cadence sweeps; many strikes come on the flutter fall. PE3-5 braid with 4m of fluorocarbon topshot plus a 30cm wire trace.

Spear Fishing

Bluewater Spearfishing

A heritage Indo-Pacific bluewater target across East Africa, Arabian Gulf, GBR, and offshore islands. Demands long-range gun, calm conditions, 20m+ visibility for trophy fish, careful lead on extremely fast targets, and breakaway-rig commitment for hard runs. Often encountered while drifting current lines and reef edges.

Inshore Spearfishing

Productive around inshore reefs, headlands, and current lines when schools push bait against structure. Active hunting — schools pass quickly, fast lead and decisive shots required. Best in calm clear conditions during baitfish migrations.
