Identification
A powerful elongated predator with a muscular laterally compressed build engineered for explosive pursuit in turbulent rapids. Devastating acceleration and sustained chasing power through fast water. Males and females externally similar.
- Brilliant silver body with blue-green iridescence over the back
- Two enormous sabre-like fangs protruding from the lower jaw, up to 15cm long
- Specialised sockets in the upper jaw that accommodate the lower fangs when the mouth closes
- Deeply forked V-shaped tail with pointed lobes

Behaviour
Aggressive solitary ambush predator that holds in current breaks, behind boulders, and at the tail-outs of rapids, launching explosive bursts to impale fleeing baitfish on its sabre fangs. Peak activity at dawn and dusk with opportunistic daytime feeding. Spectacular aerial displays on the hookset are routine. Feeding intensity climbs sharply above 26°C (79°F) in well-oxygenated current and drops off markedly in cooler or stagnant water.

Spinning
Cast large spoons, inline spinners, jerkbaits, and swimbaits to white water, current breaks, and behind boulders. Retrieve extremely fast with erratic darts and sharp pauses — slow retrieves rarely draw strikes. Heavy wire or 60lb+ fluorocarbon leader is essential; the fangs and abrasive mouth shred lighter material.
Live Lining
Free-line or float-drift a live small baitfish through current seams and eddies adjacent to rapids where payara ambush. Heavy wire trace mandatory and strong circle hooks seat cleanly around the fangs. Let the fish turn with the bait before coming tight.
Fly Fishing
Streamer
Strip large 12-18cm baitfish streamers through current seams and eddies at rapid tail-outs on 9-10wt tackle with intermediate or sinking-tip line. Aggressive fast strips with sharp pauses trigger strikes. Heavy wire bite tippet is non-negotiable and premium saltwater-grade hooks are required to withstand the fangs.
