Behaviour
A circumtropical highly-migratory open-water schooler patrolling current lines, FADs, floating debris, reef drop-offs, seamounts, and offshore weed lines in the upper 50m. Schools range from a few fish to several hundred. Hunts fast-moving small baitfish, squid, and pelagic crustaceans on or near the surface, often pursuing bait schools alongside tuna and dolphinfish. Most active in 22-28°C (72-82°F) water; pushes shallower at dawn and dusk to feed.

Trolling
The dominant Atlantic, Indo-Pacific, and eastern Pacific charter approach — pull small to medium skirted lures, cedar plugs, feathers, and shallow-diving plugs at 5-7 knots along current lines, reef drop-offs, FADs, weed lines, and floating debris. Schools concentrate around structure and bait; once a fish is hooked, slow the boat to keep the school engaged for multiple hookups. PE3-4 trolling tackle, 60-80lb fluorocarbon leader.
Spinning
An equally productive approach when schools are marked or pushing bait at the surface — cast a 40-80g metal jig, stickbait, popper, or 5-7 inch soft plastic to feeding schools. Fast erratic retrieves and walk-the-dog topwater action trigger explosive surface strikes. Most productive at first and last light around FADs and reef edges. PE3-4 spinning tackle, 50-80lb fluorocarbon leader.
Jigging
An effective approach when fish hold deeper around structure or during midday heat — drop a 100-200g speed jig or knife jig over reefs, wrecks, FAD anchor lines, and seamounts in 30-80m and work it with fast erratic retrieves. The species' aggressive nature means multiple hookups once the school is located. PE3-5 jigging tackle, 60-100lb fluorocarbon leader.
Live Lining
A productive approach when fish refuse artificials — drift a live pilchard, sardine, small mackerel, or live squid on a 3/0-5/0 hook with 40-60lb fluorocarbon leader on freeline or with a small egg sinker for depth. Particularly productive around FADs and floating debris where fish concentrate.

A challenging open-water spearo target — free-dive blue water around offshore reefs, FADs, and seamounts in 10-30m where schools patrol structure.
