Identification
A Florida and Gulf limestone-reef ambush predator that holds in ledges and caves. Powerful immediate run for cover — heavy drag and instant hard pressure are mandatory.

Behaviour
A territorial Florida and Gulf reef predator holding in ledges, caves, and crevices on limestone reefs and live-bottom in 10-130m. Powerful jaws strike-and-swallow small reef fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods passing structure. Adults solitary defending shelter sites; protogynous — female to male at larger size. Spawning aggregations form in shallower 3-12m water at 20-24°C (68-75°F). Pulls onto deeper offshore wrecks in cooler months.

Line Fishing
Bottom Fishing
The dominant Florida and Gulf grouper method. Live pinfish, pigfish, or grunts on a knocker rig or sliding-sinker with non-offset circle hook (4/0-8/0), dropped to limestone ledges, live-bottom, and offshore wrecks in 10-100m. Fresh squid and cut bait equally productive. Heavy drag and instant pressure — fish drive straight into cover.
Jigging
Highly productive over ledges, live-bottom, and wrecks in 10-50m. Drop 60-225g speed jigs and bucktail jigs to bottom and work with aggressive bouncing and hopping retrieves. Reaction strikes come on the lift. Covers water efficiently to locate fish on structure. Heavy drag essential — first run is straight into cover.
Live Lining
Effective on shallower 3-12m limestone structure during spawn aggregations when fish push up onto accessible ledges. Free-line a live pinfish or pigfish on a 4/0-6/0 circle hook with minimal weight, drifting tight to structure edges. Most productive at first and last light.

A productive Florida and Gulf reef-spearo target on rocky ledges, caves, and accessible structure in 10-30m. Fish hold in crevices and cave openings — careful stalk and accurate shot mandatory before they bolt back into cover. Float-line setup; medium-heavy speargun for the size class.
