Identification
The fastest billfish — an Indo-Pacific and Atlantic bluewater predator built for explosive surface bursts and acrobatic aerial fights. The most accessible billfish for light-tackle and fly anglers.
- Brilliant blue back with bronze or cobalt highlights, silvery-white belly
- Multiple light blue vertical bars and spots that 'light up' when excited

Behaviour
An Indo-Pacific and Atlantic bluewater apex hunting open-ocean current lines, weed lines, color changes, and offshore upwellings in 0-50m. Famous for cooperative pack hunting — schools work bait into tight balls at the surface, then attack with bill-up slashing strikes while flashing brilliant blue body bars. Highly migratory between tropical wintering grounds and warm-temperate summer feeding areas. Burst speeds reportedly to 110 km/h. Peak activity above 24°C (75°F).

Line Fishing
Trolling
The dominant approach worldwide. Pull a spread of 15-25cm skirted lures and rigged ballyhoo, mullet, or squid at 7-9 knots along current edges, color changes, weed lines, and bird workups. Run flat lines and outrigger lines with dredges and squid-chain teasers. 10-20kg light tackle with non-offset circle hooks. Smooth drop-back on strikes for clean self-set.
Live Lining
The premier sight-fishing approach — particularly Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, and Florida winter sailfishing. Drift, slow-troll, or kite-fish a live goggle eye, blue runner, threadfin herring, or pilchard on a 6/0-8/0 non-offset circle hook with fluorocarbon leader. Kite fishing dangles multiple baits enticingly on the surface — devastating when fish are concentrated.
Spinning
Exhilarating sight-cast approach during surface feeds and from teased fish at the boat. Pitch 200-350g large stickbaits, poppers, or weighted soft plastics to lit-up fish. Heavy 50-80lb braid PE setups. Aggressive walk-the-dog or fast-pop retrieves trigger explosive strikes. Best in calm conditions with cooperative fish.

Saltwater Fly
A premier Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico bluewater fly fishery. Raise fish with hookless teasers — when fish lights up, the crew pulls the teaser away while the angler casts a 20-30cm baitfish streamer. Strip aggressively in long fast pulls. 12-14wt rods with intermediate or fast-sinking lines and 12-20kg shock tippet.
Spear Fishing
Bluewater Spearfishing
A challenging Indo-Pacific bluewater spearo target — fast, agile, and quick to flee. Hunt blue water along current edges and bait balls down to 25m. Use a 130-150cm bluewater speargun with 7.5mm shaft, slip-tip, breakaway rig, and 30m+ float-line into a hard float.
