Identification
Deep-bodied freshwater specialist with steeply humped profile and stocky bottom-foraging build. Sustained pulling power and dogged endurance — strong fight, no aerials. Sexes similar. Across large rivers, oxbows, and reservoirs of the central US.

Behaviour
A bottom-foraging filter feeder using a downward sucker mouth to inhale algae, fine detritus, planktonic crustaceans, soft insect larvae, and small molluscs from silt and gravel. One of the longest-lived freshwater fish — individuals over 100 years documented. Activity peaks 20-25°C (68-77°F) and collapses below 12°C (54°F). Feeding is exclusively bottom-oriented or low-water-column over plankton clouds. Notoriously line-shy — drops bait at the slightest resistance.

Line Fishing
Bottom Fishing
The dominant method. Fermented dough balls (Wheaties + strawberry jello + Special K), fresh sweetcorn, or hair-rigged plant-based boilies on a size 4-8 hook with the lightest possible inline lead (10-30g) — buffalo drop bait at the slightest resistance. Pre-bait the swim heavily with sour grain, range cubes, or maize 24-72 hours before the session. Watch the rod tip for a quivering rather than a slamming take.
Float Fishing
Suspend dough or sweetcorn 30-60cm off bottom under a slip float over pre-baited swims. Effective when fish move up to feed in plankton clouds during summer afternoons. Light 3-5kg fluorocarbon hook length and a near-weightless cocktail of corn or boilie pop-up presents the bait critically balanced — minimum resistance is everything.
Fly Fishing
Nymphing
An emerging clearwater Texas-and-Oklahoma fly target. Sight-cast bright pink, chartreuse, or natural Backstabber, Carp Tease, and Hybrid patterns 30-60cm ahead of mudding or tailing fish. Dead-drift or barely twitch; strike on the slightest line tightening or visible mouth flash. 8wt rod, 9-12ft fluorocarbon leader, and pinpoint accuracy outproduce heavy presentations. Fly colour matches water clarity — bright in stained water, natural in clear.
Bow Fishing
Stalk shallow spawning aggregations during the spring spawning push when fish move onto vegetated flats and backwater shallows. Aim 15-30cm low for refraction; effective range 4-7m. Most active fishery is Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas where buffalo are managed alongside grass carp and gar in tournament harvests.
