Identification
A robust laterally compressed tropical ambush predator with a deep muscular build engineered for devastating topwater strikes in warm river systems. Spawning males develop a prominent forehead hump.

Behaviour
Aggressive sight-dependent ambush predator that holds tight to submerged timber, rocky points, and vegetation edges, exploding out to attack smaller fish with devastating speed. Strongly visual — strike rates drop sharply in coloured water. Peak feeding at dawn and dusk with a midday lull as fish drop into cooler depths. Feeding intensity is highest between 26-30°C (79-86°F). Spawning males are fiercely territorial and will strike anything approaching the nest.

Line Fishing
Spinning
Cast large topwater walkers and poppers, jerkbaits, and swimbaits tight to submerged timber, rocky points, and channel edges. Loud splashy surface retrieves provoke explosive strikes; on subsurface baits run fast erratic retrieves with hard pauses. Pile on pressure immediately — fish bury into structure on the hookset.
Trolling
Troll large diving crankbaits and swimbaits at 4-6 knots along main river channels, drop-offs, and submerged structure at 3-8m. Effective for locating concentrations and covering extensive river systems, particularly during the midday lull when fish drop off the surface.
Live Lining
Free-line a live 8-15cm baitfish on a strong circle hook near submerged timber and drop-offs, particularly in coloured water when lures lose effectiveness. Allow the bait to swim naturally and let the fish commit fully before setting hard.
Fly Fishing
Streamer
Strip large 10-15cm baitfish streamers and surface poppers on 9-10wt tackle to structure, shallow flats, and current breaks. Long fast strips on streamers and loud pops on surface flies trigger explosive strikes. Heavy shock tippet turns fish away from cover before they bury.
