Identification
A streamlined Atlantic bluewater billfish built for surface pursuit and acrobatic aerial fights. Famed for spectacular jumps and fast greyhound runs.
- Metallic blue to blue-green back fading to silvery-white belly
- Faint vertical bars visible on the sides

Behaviour
An Atlantic bluewater predator hunting open-ocean current edges, temperature breaks, offshore canyons, and seamounts in 0-100m. Surface to mid-water feeder — uses the bill to stun bait before consumption. Mostly solitary or in loose pairs. Highly migratory between tropical wintering grounds and temperate summer feeding areas, with documented 6,500+ km transits. Concentrates where currents converge and bait aggregates. Peak activity 22-28°C (72-82°F).

Line Fishing
Trolling
The dominant Atlantic approach. Pull a spread of small dink-size ballyhoo and squid rigged on 7/0-8/0 non-offset circle hooks with 50-60lb fluorocarbon leader at 7 knots. Run flat lines and outrigger lines with dredges and squid-chain teasers simulating bait schools. Smooth 5-second drop-back on strikes lets circle hooks self-set. Target current edges, canyon contours, and temperature breaks.
Live Lining
Highly effective along temperature breaks and current lines. Slow-troll or kite-fish a live goggle eye, small bonito, small mackerel, or flying fish on a 6/0-8/0 non-offset circle hook. Kite presentation dangles bait enticingly on the surface. Light drag setting allows clean circle-hook hookset.
Fly Fishing
Saltwater Fly
An iconic Atlantic bluewater fly fishery. Raise fish with hookless teasers trolled behind the boat — when a fish lights up, the crew pulls the teaser away while the angler casts a 25-30cm baitfish or squid streamer. Strip aggressively in long fast pulls. 12-14wt rods with floating or intermediate lines and 10-12kg shock tippet.

A niche Atlantic bluewater spearo target — rarely intentionally targeted, but encountered while hunting tuna and dolphinfish along current lines and offshore breaks. Fast and shy. Use a 140-150cm bluewater speargun with 7.5mm shaft, slip-tip, breakaway rig, and 30m+ float-line.
